MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt appears to be in fresh trouble as the state's jail administration has decided to take action against him according to the provisions of the prison manual for overstaying his furlough.

Dutt, who had applied for 14-days' furlough in December 2014, was supposed to return to Yerwada central prison on January 8. He had sought an extension on health reasons, and after some confusion the request was turned down. The actor returned to jail on January 10.

In the wake of a row over Dutt's furlough, additional director general of police (prisons) Meera Borwankar conducted a probe and found Dutt had overstayed the furlough period. "There was delay of two days in Dutt returning to the Yerwada central prison. As per the provisions of the prison manual, action taken will be taken against him," a senior bureaucrat told TOI on Wednesday.

Usually, for such violation of rules, the remission period of a prisoner is reduced. So Dutt's furlough is likely to be suitably reduced. "For one day, the furlough period is reduced by five days," explained the bureaucrat.

On Dutt's second application for extension of furlough, he said it was found that the actor's application was received by the jail administration on December 29, 2014, and submitted to the Bandra police station by post on December 31. "It was felt that instead of sending the application by post, the jail administration should have sent it by a special messenger, by fax or by e-mail. Prima facie, it appears there was a casual approach by the prison administration."
